2023 Genesis Electrified G80 Light Painting
In early January, I photographed the flagship Genesis G90 for Genesis Halifax, and two weeks later, I returned to photograph the new G80, the Genesis sibling and one of the latest additions to the Genesis electric lineup. The Genesis Electrified G80 (yes, that’s what it’s technically called) is the latest electric offering from Genesis, as the 2023 model takes the mid-size sedan into the electric market. The G80 was first introduced in 2017, and with the 2023 model, it is the first to offer two drivetrain options - an electric drivetrain or a gas-powered equivalent.
The Genesis Electrified G80 will look very similar to the gas-powered equivalent. It’s pretty much identical except for what lies beneath. The dual-motor powertrain produces 365 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. With a curb weight of 5047 lbs, it does come in to close to 800 lbs more than its gasoline sibling but will still propel the sedan to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds (0.6 quicker than gasoline G80) and will take you to a claimed distance of 453km (280 miles) before it needs a recharge.
The Photos
The included photos consist of multiple exposures stacked and blended using masks and the lighten blend modes. When I light a car, it can consist of between one exposure or up to 7-8 at times. Photographed in the service bay, in the first photo, I wanted to give it more of a studio look to isolate and focus on the car alone. After the initial blending of the exposures for the car, additional layers were added for effects such as reflections and lighting. I did use an Ulanzi light on a monopod for primary lighting underneath the car, and it’s a bit more evident in the second photo. I used the camera timer and moved into position behind the car, waving the Ulanzi light underneath to paint the shop surface under the car. It took a few tries to get the coverage I wanted, as the Ulanzi is not as bright as the Ice Light 2, and I settled for a blend of two exposures for the bottom light. A 13-second is near the car’s rear, and a 20-second is at F9 for closer to the front.
For the third interior photograph, the Ulanzi light was used once again and consisted of four light-painted exposures - the top of the dash (waving the light above the windshield), the second for the seats, the third covered the steering wheel and instrument panel/dash area, and the fourth was an additional exposure that added some light to the top right corner. The view outside the windows was cloned out and filled with colour using a large brush for more of the studio look and was finished with a curves and colour balance adjustment.
Genesis Electrified G80 Summary
The Genesis Electrified G80 enters the market with impressive performance and range. The 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 is virtually identical to the gasoline-powered model and could be the last to share the bodywork. Many manufacturers like to differentiate their models as “electric,” I can see Genesis introducing a proprietary design exclusively for their electric model within the next 1-2 years to represent its electric identity further.
