Here and There: My First Official Book
I’m happy to say that I am well into the process of creating a book that focuses on my travel photography. Right now, I’m tweaking a few final details in the design toward the final step, production. I have had this idea to create a book for over a year, but those initial stages raised some questions: most importantly, do I have a body of work that warrants creating a book? And if I did, what was it even feasible to produce? Creating a physical book is expensive and challenging, especially when you do not have a substantial following to support it. Your followers can help back the project with preorders, which can substantially decrease the risk involved.
Production and Costs
There can be significant upfront costs when producing a book. It can require committing to many copies to get a feasible cost per book, and I wasn’t interested in a high volume. Currently, I am looking at different print and material options and vendors that can produce what I have envisioned. Some samples are on the way to give me a more informed representation of materials and print quality, which will help me decide. Costs vary quite a bit when looking at different vendors, so balancing quality and price is paramount.
An essential aspect of making a book available for purchase is having it at a fair cost. I’ve tried other print-on-demand providers before, and although the quality is excellent, high prices from some providers make it unfeasible to sell. The goal is to have a quality, affordable production. The challenge is to balance that.
Shipping is also a significant challenge. Shipping within Canada should be a non-issue, but international shipping can be costly. Numerous mailing services have widely different costs, and once I have the book in hand to estimate the weight and size of the package that will be shipped, I’ll be able to see if it makes sense to offer it worldwide. I may need to limit the countries I can ship to to have a book that is not priced out of consideration.
Book Details
The book Here and There will include photographs from my January 2013 to September 2024 travels. This period in my life was definitive, during which I grew immensely. The pictures in the book are what I consider some of my best from that time. Many have been shared on this website and blog over the past few years; some have not. I chose the book’s name because it represents a significant distance from Nova Scotia to the western United States or east to Europe and South Africa.
Here and There is not a street photography book. Although street and travel photography are connected, this book focuses primarily on the locations and the people within them.
The production run will be limited; if required, I will have more produced. I don’t expect to sell considerable copies of this book, but that’s not the point of creating it. It is nice to profit from my work, but for me, it’s not the most critical part of photography. I’m lucky enough to have paid work, mostly from my automotive photography, but my travel photography is for the pure love of the craft. I enjoy the experience of travel and discovery, creating, editing, and sharing. Producing this book is a personal milestone. It’s also for those interested in having some of my most meaningful work in physical form.
Here and There will be a hardcover book measuring approximately 11” x 8.5" in a landscape presentation. It will contain over 60 images presented on satin-finish pages, with an early 2025 release in January or February. In addition to the physical book, Here and There will also be available as an eBook.
If you are interested, I would appreciate it if you would consider purchasing a copy. Your support means a lot to me; thank you.
