2023 Genesis G90 Photo Shoot

Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph the 2023 Genesis G90 for Genesis Halifax. The newest G90 includes the recent design language that Genesis calls “athletic elegance,” which, amongst other features, includes the now recognizable crest grille and the ultra-thin, two-line headlamps. The design overall is not unlike the 2023 G80 besides the size, and without having both the G80 and G90 side-by-side, one could be mistaken for the other.

What is the G90?

The Genesis G90 is the most luxurious model in the Genesis sedan lineup, which consists of the G70, G80, and the range-topping G90. Along with the G90 being the largest of the three, the G90 features the latest technology from Genesis for a gasoline-powered vehicle. The Genesis brand has evolved quickly and seems to have moved promptly with redesigns. Although it used to be hard to spot a Genesis amongst other vehicles on the road, Genesis may have found a design language that best represents the Genesis brand as something unique. The split headlamps and grille are quite recognizable, and you can also find these features in the GV line of SUVs, including the GV70, GV80, and the smaller GV60 Electric. Time will tell how long they utilize these features before a redesign. As of today, the design is elegant, simple, retrained and, in my opinion, a great representation of what Genesis aims to be, although the G90 could be interpreted as a bit too simple as it doesn’t necessarily have the presence of some of its main competitors like the Mercedes S-Class or the BMW 7-Series. The technology inside definitely rivals those brands and, in some ways, surpasses what Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, or Audi offers.

What Are the Specs?

As the most expensive sedan in Genesis’s lineup, you can expect a wealth of comfort and technology options, and the G90 delivers. This particular model, the Genesis G90 Prestige, delivers 409 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque which are fair numbers for a vehicle of this size. 400 hp in a car these days is nothing to get excited about, but the power is enough to launch the G90 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, according to Car & Driver, which is impressive for a car of this size that weighs just over 5,100 lbs.

What Are Some of the Luxury Features?

Power and numbers are not the primary focus of the G90, as comfort, convenience, and technology are at the forefront. When you first step up to the G90, you will be treated to retractable door handles that are both soft-close and automatic-closing. With a push of a button on the interior door panel, you can automatically close your doors, and when inside, you can also pop them open a bit before pushing them fully open. The feature itself is nothing new, as luxury cars have been employing automatic doors for some time now, but it fits in well with the technology offered and is a nice introduction to what is to be found inside. Some of the more unique features of the G90 include a fingerprint authentication system, active noise cancelling technology to make your ride as quiet as possible, and an in-car fragrance system with a mood curator function that will adjust the music, scent, lighting, curtain, and massage functions all at once. The G90 includes leather upholstery, genuine wood trim, massaging front seats, and a wealth of driving assists and crash avoidance systems.

The G90 is a car for those who like to be driven. The back features an 8-inch rear armrest touch display, power rear and side sunshades, reclining rear seats with heat, ventilation, massage functions, and 37.8" of rear leg room. The two rear passengers share an 8-inch touch screen between the seats that can control everything from mood lighting, temperature preference, fragrance options, music, curtain position and massage function, all from the backseat.

Summary

The 2023 Genesis G90 further aims for buyers of the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7-Series, and Audi A8 as the most direct competitors but does so at a significantly lower entry price. Genesis may not yet have the brand recognition of those other brands. Still, Genesis continues to innovate quickly and should be on the list of anyone looking for a luxurious, full-size sedan.
