2019 BMW X3 M40i Photo Shoot

What is the X3 M40i?

Since it debuted in 2003, the BMW X3 has become one of the most popular models in BMW’s lineup, but it wasn’t until 2018 that BMW introduced the M40i variant of the BMW X3. The X3 M40i offered the utility of the X3 with higher performance, courtesy of a turbocharged, six-cylinder engine that delivered 355 hp and 365 lb-feet of torque. BMW also upgraded the chassis to improve the handling of this mid-size SUV, and upgrades over the standard X3 include a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system, adaptive M dampers and bigger M Sport brakes, and with this particular model, the optional 21-inch wheels. And although there are higher, performance-focused models in the X3 lineup, the X3 M40i is a highly capable performer.

As the sun set, I moved the car and shot into the light. And when you do that, you usually get a highly exposed photo and reduced contrast, which I was going for.

Photo Treatment and Post-Processing

For post-processing, I always use Lightroom (LR) and Photoshop (PS) in my workflow, as I am comfortable performing certain tasks in different programs. I kept the processing minimal, which included:

  • Radial gradient masks to increase exposure and shadow on the car when needed. (LR)

  • Small increases in temperature, vibrance and saturation. (LR)

  • Minimal Sharpening. (LR)

  • Minimal curves adjustment to reduce white to avoid blown highlights and black levels to decrease overall contrast. (LR or PS)

  • Colour balance where needed to increase warmth. (shift in the shadows yellow) (PS)
